Today I have awoken with a sudden scream. It was as if a banshee's wail had pierced into my slumber, but I had not dreamt of anything more than an average night. With a start, I sat upright in my bed and realised the source of the shriek had in fact come from outside my window. Through the darkness of night, I saw an enormous bat, its wings spread wide, flying in erratic circles above a neighbouring rooftop.
What strange behaviour from a creature of the night, I thought. I made to watch the spectacle, but then my attention was elsewhere. A dim light, still faint in the moonlight, drifted past my window and alighted to the pavement below. I wondered aloud what it was that had brought this demi-light, and why it seemed so out of place.
Daring beyond my wildest dreams, I pushed open my window and leapt upon the sill. I called out to the light, and it answered in kind. It beckoned me and I could not resist. I could feel myself silently flying, yet with each passing second, my fears began to grow. For it was then that I realised that my eyes had blazed as red as a vampirix's should.
I landed in a field, a vast expanse of green where I could feel such an incredible peace and serenity. I lounged about the grass, taking in this all-encompassing calm and quiet, and it was then that I heard a siren song emanating from the bushes. I followed it, immediately entranced and overwhelmed by the beauty of its strange melody, and I was soon surrounded by a troop of merry sprites.
We dined in a clearing, on treats of spun sugar and honey and shared stories of our days and travails. I learned much of life out in the open, of chasing the sunrise and casting it off with the sunset. We sang and danced around a crackling bonfire, the light of which illuminated the stars in the night sky above us.
It seemed I had found my place in this world. I existed here between day and night, taking part in the day's joys and the night's mysteries. I relished in the excitement of the unknown, and such senses were all the more amplified when the wild creatures of dusk emerged from the woods. I felt like an ancient princess warrior, able to conquer anything that came my way.
