Vampirix diary Mary Read

I had a strange dream last night about flying spiders. They were everywhere, looming over me, weaving webs, trying to catch me. I leapt from the sky to land on a rooftop and laughed with glee as the spiders dispersed.

The sun is rising. I can feel it on my skin and I welcome it eagerly. I begin by nursing a Pina Colada, reclining on the rooftop in a way that no vampire should, and feeling very much like an ancient princess warrior.

The cellphone in my pocket buzzes. Another of my girlfriends is asking to meet up for coffee. She just got back from a trip to an exotic country and is eager to share her stories. I'm always ready for a little gossip and lay down my Pina Colada in resignation before changing into something that screams shopping.

Tonight, I told my girlfriends, I'm going out with the cats—I'm sure they could use some business. When Dracula and his cohorts pull up outside the mall, I take a seat in the center of their car in my very best dress.

We pull up to a dark house and Dracula looms ominously over me with a sinister smile. He's going to a party and is eager to show me off. I greet my hosts awkwardly and make a show of my intelligence. Conversation flows easily, and before I know it I'm laughing and making jokes like I own the place.

Suddenly I'm aware of the shadows in the corners of the room, watching me curiously. I seem to have attracted their attention and their eyes follow me intently as I move from group to group.

Eventually, it's time to leave and the cats wave goodbye from the car. I can't shake the feeling of being followed and it sends a slight chill up my spine. I roll down the window as we drive off and feel the moisture in the air as the rain falls from the sky. I can't help it—I'm oddly contented, like I'm a princess in a fairy-tale.

Back home, I empty my bag of purchases and set about planning my next venture—someplace distant, strange, and exotic. I'll leave tonight with the setting of the full moon... and I'll be back just in time to party again.
