I woke up to a loud scream that tore through my bedroom. It seemed to be coming from the closet, and I was nervous but curious. I leapt out of bed, ready to investigate. I opened the closet door cautiously, expecting to find an intruder or a wild animal. Instead, I found a small bat flying around in circles. Its wings were a bright and vibrant emerald green, and its eyes were a menacing black.
I quickly grabbed something to cover the bat with, and threw it in a box. The bat was stunned, but not frightened. “Why were you screaming? Is something wrong?” I whispered to the bat. The small creature looked up at me with its black eyes and said in its tiny voice, “I was just searching for a snack.”
I started to wonder what kind of snack a bat could possibly eat. Then I realized, this must be one of the vampire bat species. It needed blood to survive, but what kind of creature would be stupid enough to let a bat bite it? Then it hit me - I was the stupid creature.
I laughed for a moment, then quickly sobered up. I could feel my blood starting to drain away as the bat fed on me. I had no idea how strong the little critter was, but I knew that I had to protect myself before it drained away all of my life force.
With a quick motion, I grabbed the box and shut the lid. I took another peek inside, and found the bat still nestled in the corner. Relieved that the creature hadn’t escaped, I made sure to seal the lid properly.
Despite the nightmare I had just experienced, I felt strangely relieved. I’ve always known that I was special in some way, but this felt like some kind of confirmation. I turned towards the window, and the setting sun began to cast an eerie light over the room. The vampire bat seemed to sense my thoughts, and in its tiny voice it said, “Go forth and embrace your destiny.”
And with that, I promised to live each day as if it were my last.
